(This was originally a thread on the Cyan forums)
Most of the following tweaks are made irrelevant by the 25th Anniversary collection (links are provided), but are valid if you’re still using the old versions.
Here is a quick list of fixes to make the Myst games work under Windows ≥8, with links to the respective forum posts, and to MacOS issues when possible. Most of the patches are archived at the French forums Myst Aventure and at Korov’ev’s MediaFire archive.
Myst
Copy QuickTime.qts
from the 4.1 CD into the Myst folder.[1] Run in Windows 95/ME compatibility, disable Visual Themes and run as Administrator.
Windows & MacOS: use ScummVM, by copying the required files in a folder of your choice.[2]
Alternatively, use the GOG or Steam versions.
realMyst (non-ME edition)
Should install fine; This patcher (direct link) might help with the original CD version.
The MacOS version is not universal binary, so it will not run on the latest versions.
Unfortunately the original realMyst was retired from both GOG and Steam.
Riven
Copy QuickTime.qts
(e.g. from here – direct link) into the Riven folder.[3] Run in Windows 98/ME compatibility, disable Visual Themes, disable Desktop Composition, disable Fisplay Scaling on High DPI Settings.
Windows & MacOS: use ScummVM, by copying the required files in a folder of your choice.[4]
MacOS: RivenX may still work (direct link).
Alternatively, use the GOG or Steam versions.
Myst III: Exile
Should install fine. Here is a list of updaters. You might need to install the no-CD patch.[5]
Windows & MacOS: use ScummVM, by copying the required files in a folder of your choice.
Alternatively, use the GOG or Steam versions.
Myst IV: Revelation
Should install fine. You might need to set the Compatibility Mode to Windows 98/ME, and maybe install the no-DVD patch.[6]
Updaters are available here, thanks to the Wayback Machine.
Alternatively, use the GOG or Steam versions.
Myst V: End of Ages
There is a patcher (direct link) at Cyan’s Cho pages.
MacOS: there is an updated installer here (direct link). Myst V is not universal binary, so it will not run on the latest versions.[7]
Alternatively, you could try these wrappers.
Windows & MacOS: alternatively, use the GOG or Steam versions.
Uru: The Complete Chronicles (offline)
Should install fine, but check these tips from the Guild of Writers.
Under Windows 10, if it is not working try disabling Full Scene Anti-Aliasing.[8]
The 1.2 patch is still available (direct link) from the Ubisoft archive.
A copy of the official no-DVD patch is still available (direct link) thanks to the Wayback Machine.
MacOS: a wrapper is likely your best option.
Windows & MacOS: alternatively, use the GOG or Steam versions.
